Communicate
Without Sound
NOT A SOUND CAMP is centered on SHARED EXPERIENCE and RADICAL INCLUSION.
NOT A SOUND CAMP is centered on SHARED EXPERIENCE and RADICAL INCLUSION.
"Not a Sound" is a play on words: if you are a part of Burning Man communities, you will get the joke. If not, let us explain: Burning Man has different types of theme camps and one category of camp is a SOUND CAMP. This is a camp where music is played (it's usually very loud).
Our camp gets its name not because we don't like loud music but because we all communicate without sound and expect all our lovely visitors to do the same. If someone starts to use their default world voice we can just point to the sign: NOT A SOUND! Our message will get across… easy peasy.
communicate without sound? Well, many of our camp members are deaf, and if we communicate with sound, these burners are excluded from participating with everyone. So we eliminate the communication modality that causes this exclusion: sound!
While signed language is the primary communication modality, knowing a signed language is not a prerequisite to visit our theme camp. We celebrate all forms of sound-free communication (gestures, writing, hugs, sly winks or shrugs) and are excited to engage with all burners so everyone has an opportunity to to learn and practice alternative ways of connecting with deaf people. This is the heart of this theme camp.
One of the ten principles of burning man is radical inclusion, and we want to uplift this principle by carving space where accessibility of deaf people is at the forefront.
does this look like? Not using sound to communicate within our theme camp at all times allows both hearing and deaf camp members to have a SHARED EXPERIENCE together — which we value greatly.
We believe this is what makes Burning Man and its offshoots so uniquely special: people from all walks of life, with different abilities and backgrounds, come together for a limited period of time and share a variety of unique experiences with one another. Burning Man would not be Burning Man if we all did our own thing. It is what it is because we do it together.
The Not a Sound camp embraces the core value of RADICAL INCLUSION by asking its members and visitors to refrain from using speech or sound to communicate while in the camp.
does it work? we provide tools and expertise to guide all burners in an adventure of communication that is outside the default world's norms and expectations. Don't know signed language? No problem! Come see us and we can show you to make new friends and talk about anything all without saying a word.
